About Flies

Flies

What are some facts about flies?

Flies breed in uncovered garbage cans, fresh horse manure, garbage, human excretion, cow manure, and rotting vegetable matter-as long as the place is moist, warm, with decaying material protected by sunlight.

When fly eggs hatch, in 8 hours, fly larvae or maggots can already grow.

Flies can enter a building that has openings not much larger than the head of a pin.

One female fly can already produce thousands of offspring in a single breeding season and one season can breed as much as 25 generations.

A fly can infect food by merely landing on it because they can only swallow food in liquid form thus they vomit on food for easy swallowing.

Flies can excrete feces for every 4-5 minutes and they do it anywhere.

What diseases flies carry?

House flies are one of the most common insects that plague man because they carry numerous diseases and germs such as typhoid fever, malaria, cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, tuberculosis, anthrax, and parasitic worms.

Flies may spread disease and are considered parasites to animals. Myiasis is the infection of an animal with fly larvae (maggots). Common in cattle, sheep, and deer, myiasis can also occur in humans when certain species of flies are attracted to ulcerated skin, where they lay eggs; the hatched larvae then burrow into the skin. Depending on the type of fly, the larvae remain in the skin and cause boil-like lesions, or they wander extensively through the body and cause damage to various organs. Intestinal myiasis occurs when humans ingest food containing the eggs of larvae.
